If you’ve found yourself circling the same few house plans over and over again, you’re not alone. One of the most common things we hear is: “I’ve admired your work for years, but I don’t know where to begin.” Or “I will build a (house plan of choice) one day.”

Listen, we understand how big this decision is. Choosing a house plan is more than just selecting rooms on a page — it’s choosing how you’ll live every day. With the ones you love most. For hopefully many, many years. And it’s totally normal to feel overwhelmed. That’s why we’ve spent decades refining our process, designing tools and resources to meet you wherever you are in your home-building journey.

So how do you know when you’re ready to move forward? Here are some signs it might be time (in our opinion).

You’ve Been Researching for a While
You’ve likely saved photos, browsed hundreds of plans, and maybe even made a Pinterest board or two. If you’re starting to recognize what styles, layouts, and features you consistently come back to, that’s a sign your vision is starting to take shape. As humans, we like what we like—lean into that.

You’ve Narrowed in on a Lot or Location
Whether you’ve bought land or simply know where you want to build, understanding your location is key. Every lot has its own needs — setbacks, views, sun orientation — and knowing where your future home will sit helps you start narrowing in on the right plan. This part is so incredibly important.

You’re Clear on What You Don’t Want
Sometimes it’s easier to eliminate than to decide. If you’ve realized you don’t want an open concept kitchen, or that you definitely need a first-floor primary suite, you’re ahead of the game. Knowing what you don’t want is often the key to discovering what you do need.

You’re Revisiting the Same Plans
This is where it gets personal to us. If you keep returning to a few specific plans on our website, you’re probably closer than you think. That pull is worth listening to. Even if the plan isn’t perfect yet, it might be the ideal base to modify and make your own.

You’re Asking the Right Questions
When you start wondering about cost, builder timelines, or what’s included in our sets — that’s a sign you’re thinking like a future homeowner. You’re not just dreaming anymore. You’re planning. And we can help.

If you found yourself thinking “that’s me” to everything listed above, then let’s chat! We always recommend taking our Housematch quiz first to help you find plans that fit your needs. After that, we recommend purchasing a study set to help you dig further into the detailed floor plans and elevations. Those two steps are the easiest ways to get started—and we are with you the entire time!
